Morphotek Issued Patent 6,576,468 for Platform Technology to Develop Novel Classes of Antimicrobial Agents

June 23, 2003

Morphotek Inc. announced today that the United States Patent and Trademark Office has issued it a patent covering the isolation of mutant cell lines to generate novel antimicrobial agents. The issued patent describes the use of the company's patented platform process, morphogenics, to rapidly evolve mammalian cell lines in the presence of the pathogen of interest for which a pharmaceutical is sought, followed by mutant selection, stabilization of the mutant phenotype, and ultimately, discovery of the antimicrobial agent expressed by the mutant cell line.

Dr. Nicholas Nicolaides, President and Chief Executive Officer of Morphotek commented, "This application is one of many examples of how our platform can be readily applied to develop customized organisms for pharmaceutical product discovery and development. This platform offers a novel approach to generate new classes of antimicrobial compounds that are suitable for fighting infectious disease and counter agents for biological organisms used in bioterrorism."
